The resume is the most effective way to share your career history with a potential employer. Historically, the resume was printed on paper and either mailed or personally delivered to the employer. However, in today's career marketplace, the best way to deliver the resume is via the Internet.
There are many places to post your resume on the Internet. You may use Google.com to search for the best local website where you will be allowed to post your resume to a general database. Examples of websites can include specific companies or headhunters. You should not have to pay money to post your resume. If the website asks for money, do not pay them. The company searching for the employee will pay the website or headhunter a fee for the privilege of using the resume database. It is clear to see that the job-seeker has an advantage in this case, as the headhunting companies/websites will be eager to fill up the database with new, skilled job-seekers.
Once you have found the website or headhunting firm that you want to post your resume with, the next step is to format your resume. Resumes on the Internet need to be prepared in a text-only format. All special fonts and formatting need to be eliminated so as to make it easier to upload and to catalog each resume. Keeping your resume in text-only format allows the web-site's database to easily scan the resume and to ensure that your resume will be found by the best employer for you.
When writing your resume, you should make sure you use "keywords" in your previous job descriptions. Resumes on the Internet need to be easily searched by computers, and through the use of keywords, you will ensure that your rank in the pool of job-seekers will be higher than that of someone who has not used keywords in their resume. A quick check on the Internet will help you find the best keywords you should be using for your particular career.
Another consideration for posting your resume on-line is privacy. A good website or headhunter will protect your personal information from the general public. The only time your information will be distributed is usually if the potential employer has paid a fee to get that information. In addition to this, the job-hunting website may also give the option of not allowing certain companies to see your resume. This would be useful if you were working for Company A and you were seeking a new job and you didn't want Company A to know. If you ask that your resume not be presented to Company A (since you already work there) then you can avoid the possibility that you could lose your job before you secure a new one.
Posting your resume on-line will guarantee that you will be successful at finding a new job. The rate at which a resume can be shared on the Internet is far greater than if you were to distribute your resume "the old fashioned way". However, it is still up to you to make sure your resume is written well, with proper keywords and placed in the best career database. If you achieve all of this, you will be successful.
