Easy ways your family can "go green"

Living green, what does it really mean?

Simply this: live in a way that will sustain the earth's ecological balance. We can even aim to give something back to help restore it.

Sound daunting? It's not. What you do really counts no matter how small. It is the small steps taken by many human beings that will amount to a gigantic leap for the earth and humankind.

Here are ten steps you can take to get you and your family started:

(1) Buy local

If available go to the local farmers market to buy your produce. Already you have decreased the carbon footprint it takes to transport produce from the producer into your supermarket.

(2) Buy fresh

Unprocessed food takes less energy to produce and is healthier for your body. You'll use less packaging, and won't be faced with the decision of whether to reuse, recycle or throw away.

(3) Buy organic

If it's certified organic, you can be sure that it's free from a huge list of poisons that contribute not only to polluting our world, but our bodies as well.

(4) Buy in bulk

Store in glass or reusable containers. It's cheaper too. Be aware that if it's imported, it might be lathered in chemicals. Check the source with your retailer before you purchase.

(5) Use eco-friendly cleaning and personal products

They're healthier for you and the environment. If you feel inclined, you'll be amazed at how cheap and easy it is to make the products yourself. Google for recipes.

(6) East less meat

Food lower on the food chain takes far less energy to produce. There are health benefits to you and your family from cutting down on your meat consumption as well.

(7) Cook one or two pot meals

Get a steamer and layer your vegetables. Cook more Casseroles, Bakes and Stir-frys. You'll save on power while eating delicious food.

(8) Eat more salad

It takes practically no energy not to cook. You'll also reap many health benefits.

(9) Hire rather than buy.

What is the point in cluttering the shed with rarely used commodities such as power tools? If you don't like the idea of hiring, you could consider share buying with a friend.

(10) Use canvas or reusable bags for shopping.

Be aware, so that you can make informed choices. You'll see how easy it is to begin the "green" journey.
