Best vitamins for women

For years, I was forever faithful to the "One A Day" WeightSmart vitamin supplement. But, when I hit the age of forty and began having some pre-menapausal symptoms, I decided it was time to not worry so much about weight loss and begin focusing on what i need to stay healthy for the next forty years of my life.

Now, I don't believe that there is one best vitamin that every woman should be taking. I do believe that because each woman is a unique individual, she should consult with her doctor and together they can make the best choice possible.

Following my own advice, I recently switched to a physician who specializes in Internal Medicine, had a full panel of bloodwork done, and had a full physical. It was determined that I am basically a healthy woman and based on my eating habits, it would benefit me to take the "One A Day" Women's formula. Not only does this formula have 100% Daily Value of Vitamin C & E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Chromium, and 200% Daily Value of Vitamin D, it also supports breast health - the box even had a pink ribbon on it. For me, at the age of 40, Vitamin D to promote strong bones to help prevent Osteoporosis, and ingredients to support breast health, this is an awesome combination.

The "One A Day" Women's formula is the best choice for me, but it may not be the best choice for you. Choosing the wrong vitamin supplement or taking supplements that are not balanced correctly can be both costly and hazardous to your health. Let's think about this for a moment. A healthy, forty-seven year old male taking a "One A Day" for Men supplement that promotes prostate health not knowing that he had a Liver/Blood issue called Hemochromotosis - a disease in which the liver does not function properly to remove the iron from his blood. (Just a note, Hemochromotosis is a genetic disease that does not present itself until the third or fourth decade of life) In short, the iron that was made by the body, the iron that he was getting from eating red meat, and the iron that he was getting from the vitamin supplement, had to have a place to settle, so it settled in his joints, causing arthritic like symptoms and also in his testicles, causing another problem.

The point of this short story is that, for this gentleman, taking a supplement was proving to be deadly. Had he kept taking the supplement and not found out about his Hemochromotosis, he would have been dead in about 3 years because the excess iron was poisoning him.

So before you decide on your own to take a vitamin supplement, please consult with your doctor, read labels and if you still have questions, contact the company who makes the supplement.

By the way, the gentlemen in the story above, my husband, is doing fine. He is treating for his Hemochromotosis and eating the right foods for good nutrition instead of taking any kind of supplement.
