If you are going to buy clothes, always leave the hangers on because many people put their child's clothes in a closet rather than a dresser. I do know this is not true for everyone, but most people I know including myself put their young children's clothes in closet and don't want to have to go out and buy hangers that they could have gotten for free with the clothes. There are a lot of great presents to buy. On behalf of the baby, infant toys would be good. Rattles and other learning aides are helpful. On the behalf of the parent(s), a boppy pillow helps a lot and plenty of diapers and wipes are great. Unless the parent(s) don't change the diaper very often, there is no need for lots of diaper rash ointments, one tube of rash ointment and some baby powder has lasted me a year and I wouldn't be surprised if I still have them both by the time my son is out of diapers all together. I know everyone wants to buy clothes for the newborn, but if the bay's due in the middle of summer, don't buy summer clothes, buy autumn clothes or even winter clothes because the baby is more comfortable wearing nothing that first tear during the summer, and it's totally acceptable, yes, even with a girl. Of course a few outfits for the summer wouldn't hurt because everyone knows the grandma's houses and everyone comes to the house to see the new baby, so yes, a couple outfits are fine, but my son got about 10 outfits when he was newly born and he wore 4 of them before he grew out of them because he always just wore his diaper. Also, bottles are always a good idea, especially if they are plastic because nipples mysteriously go missing and if you let them sit too long before being washed, they get stained and smell bad no matter what you try to do to it, so it's nice to have enough that you could just throw away the gross ones or replace a nipple. Those are a few ideas for baby shower gifts. I hope they help.
