Tips for using gimp

When your children talk about using gimp, please don't think they are actually engaging in exploiting a person. Gimp is simply strips of plastic lacing that can be used for a variety of fun crafts! Besides the usual keychains, bracelets, necklaces, etc., here are a few unusual and clever activities to impress your child:

1.) Gimp is ideal for backpack embellishment. When I was a kid, I thrived on having the coolest backpack, which allowed me to express my individuality as well. Lace gimp to create a lanyard that hangs from the zipper (this also helps your child find the zipper quickly!). Lettered beads can be added to read anything your child desires, such as the name of the school mascot, their favorite band, or "daytime occupation" (i.e. cheerleader).

2.) Placemats and "picnic rugs." These two items use the same technique of weaving gimp to create a square or rectangular shape. Using gimp placemats is great because they act as a daily reminder of what your child has accomplished. "Picnic rugs" are simply extra large placemats, and are ideal for rolling up and taking to the park, especially on the Fourth of July.

3.) Bookmarks! These can also be given as inexpensive gifts and embellished with plastic beads.

4.) Once your child gets used to weaving, he or she can make a totebag, which works wonders at the pool or beach. It's plastic construction makes it perfect for wet towels and suits, and it won't collect sand like cotton ones do.

When using gimp, keep in mind that your color choices are endless (one of the many pleasures of using this material). Also, never put your gimp placemat in the microwave or under a very hot plate or pot to avoid ending up with a melted mess. Keep your gimp straight and flat while you're weaving, and you'll be well on your way to your very own gimp masterpiece!
