As I had learned, single parents could use all the help they can get. My mom happens to be a single mother with me as the only child. I have quite a good number of friends that happen to be single parents themselves as well. If you're recently divorced and are now a single parent, do not worry much. There are ways you as a single parent can get help and so forth. With the changes made in the government with the last few decades, you could possibly get the support.
In the past, it was pretty different with my mother. As long as I was "healthy", she didn't need "help". The system in which single parents are provided support was pretty messed up back in that that time making it difficult to find the support that you need. However, minorities tend to get the short end of the stick back then as well. Before I was born, my family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam after the war. There was still plenty of racial tension at the time and a good number was directed towards Asians. My mom and I had our fair share of prejudice in the past and it made finding support very difficult.
If may be a bit easier if you have one child. But more than one child can get pretty difficult as well. If you're still in school, do not drop out. That's one thing you do not want to do. There might still be the welfare program initiated by Bill Clinton that could still be in action where you can get benefits by staying in school. If you're in high school, talk with a guidance counselor as they can help find programs to help you out.
If you're in college, talk with the counselors there. There are high chances that you will not be the only single parent on campus. College campuses have all sorts programs to accommodate single parents. Chances are that there is an on-campus support group for single parents. Find out if they have it on campus and take advantage of it. Call all the campuses to see if they have those support groups. You want to take advantage of all your options and resources.
Form relationships with other students. Most definitely form relationships with other single parents. There are plenty of professors who are single parents. You could ask around to see if there are any. It doesn't hurt to ask around. But it will hurt if you do not ask around. You could possibly get a job on campus to make some extra money.
