All children should know basic cooking skills. It is as important as most other life skills you would teach your child. Even small children can help in the kitchen. Children love the excitement of helping cook. Give them that opportunity and pleasure.
The first rule of kitchen safety is to never leave young or inexperienced children in the kitchen unattended. Explain to your child that they can't ever touch the kitchen appliances without your supervision. Teach them to be responsible. Encourage them to wash hands and keep all areas as clean as possible during the food preparation process.
Tell your child what the recipe calls for, and let them help you gather the needed materials. This will help them get more familiar with different things in the cooking world. They will also learn their way around the kitchen better.
Mixing ingredients is a great way to let children get involved. Measure everything out, and let your child mix them up. As your child gets older, you can start letting them measure out the ingredients themselves.
Let your child help open cans and pour the food into pans. They can also open cans of biscuits, help you season meat, and do other food preparations. Children are usually eager to help; you just have to point them in the right reaction.
Start small. Let your child help you fix something simple like eggs. Allow them to break the eggs and stir it up. Help them pick the eggshells out. You can even let them stand on a stool or chair and help scramble the eggs up.
Teach children the simple things first. It is possible to burn boiling water. Your child should learn the basics. Get your child comfortable with water and the easy things you can make. The best child friendly dishes are noodles or macaroni and cheese.
Be patient. Great cooks aren't born overnight. If your child adds too much or too little of something, so what? Eat it and move on. Everybody has to start somewhere. Praise your child for their effort and do the best you can to help them do better next time. Negative criticism does no one good in the long run.
There are many cooking type toys that you could get for your child to help boost their esteem. Most small children love having their own kitchen replica. For responsible children, consider an easy bake oven. This will help your child's desire to cook grow, also.
Remember that children learn from actions and words. Sometimes, it isn't enough to show them, you must tell them to. Tell them what you are doing as you do it. Ask them questions along the way to see if they are paying attention. Allow your child to help as often as they want to. Encourage them to cook but don't push it on them. When the time is right, they will learn but keep the option open for them.
