Beginner's guide to obstacle billiards games

by jayj

Obstacle billiard games are related to pool and snooker. The difference is that they can be played on specially designed tables and have pins or 'obstacles' on the playing field, to make the game more difficult. There are three main types of obstacle billiard games:

BAGATELLE. This is an indoor version of shuttles and is related to Billiards.
The aim is to get as many balls past pins and into holes as you can.

BAR BILLIARDS. This is played on a table with nine holes, which are given each given between ten and twenty points. It is played with seven white balls and one red ball. If a red ball is pocketed, the player doubles his points. There are two white pegs and one red pegs which are used as obstacles. The player will lose his turn and the points of his turn if he knocks over a white ball. If he knocks over a red peg, he will also lose his turn, but will lose all of the points of the game thus far.

The aim of this game is to get one ball into each of the nine holes, three times. There is a time limit of seventeen minutes. The winner is the person with the most points at the end of this time period.

BUMPER POOL. This is played on a specially designed table with twelve bumpers. Two on either side of each pocket. The ten balls are position in five places next to each side of the table.

The aim is to sink as many balls as possible into the holes at the opposite side of the table. There is not cue ball and the balls are hit directly into the holes. The winner is the person who pots the most balls.

In conclusion, many Obstacle billiard games have transcended from France, in an attempt to bring outdoor games indoors. They are a refreshing change to the standard games of pool, snooker and billiards.
