How to start a conversation and make friends

by Nevada

Created on: August 19, 2007

No matter where you are, or what you are doing there will be other people and the chance to meet a friend. Start with the common ground that you both have at that moment in time. You can use it by building upon the occasion and have stepping stones to open the door for conversation. For example, if you are walking your dog and meet someone along the way who is also walking their dog, you instantly have something in common. It is therefore very easy to start a conversation with another dog owner. All you have to do is talk about dogs and the rest will flow very naturally.

You must remember that to make a good friend you must be a good friend. A good friend is a good listener, is caring, is genuine, is interested in all things, is there for the other person, and is willing to give of themselves unconditionally. Make sure that you are taking good care of yourself so that you can bestow blessings on others without wearing yourself thin. If you have a positive outlook on life and believe that you live to give. The blessings will come to you for living this lifestyle. Living an optimistic lifestyle brings with it a positive result for your life. You are one person; think about how many people that you come in contact with everyday. You can start a conversation so easy, just say "Hi" and say something constructive to that person. Or help them in some way and tell them to have a nice day! Things this small can be something very huge in that person's life. You do not know what is happening in that person's life at that moment. They could be suffering in the worst way, the death of a loved one, severe illness in the family and you have reached out to touch them in an encouraging way. You lightened their day.
Imagine that you are in line at the grocery store. People are usually so quiet. I have always wondered about this. What do they think about when they are standing in line waiting for their turn to put the food on the belt? It is so easy to turn to the person beside you and notice something in their cart and remark on it. Like "Is that good, I was going to try it but haven't yet"? Common ground. It gives you quite awhile to talk as well. I have met a lot of people in the grocery store, and have come away with a few friends. Reaching out to people is a wonderful way to feel magnificent. It just fuels your body and soul with a renewed energy that put an everlasting smile on your face.
Now that you have that everlasting smile on your face it is even easier to start conversations. People love happy people, and they will be drawn to your glowing spirit. They will want to talk to you, and it is contagious. The more you do it, the better you feel and your liveliness and energy will flow from you to others that are around you. You will be a wonderful friend, an everlasting, fantastic friend. So, put a smile on your face and get up the courage to say even on word. "Hi". That's all it takes, and your world will change, and you would be totally blown away if you could see what you would be doing to the lives of the people who you come into contact with.
