The costs and benefits of web forums

to the web site's visitors.

Anyone who has participated in a forum before may be familiar with the term moderator. A moderator is a referee that is charged with monitoring the forum and making sure that problems do not arise that interfere with the usefulness of the forum. Unfortunately moderating a forum can be quite time consuming and extremely frustrating for the website owner.

Website owners sometimes delegate the moderating duties to others. This can in itself be a huge mistake if the website owner doesn't actually moderate the moderator. Perhaps the most problematic forum is the instance where the moderator themselves are members of the controlling clique. Yes,these sorts of things do happen and can result in a extremely unpleasant experience for forum users that may be there looking for information they need.

Visitors to your website are expecting to be treated with respect and be able to find useful information and resources. If you choose to use a forum on your site, then by all means be sure you are moderating the forum to prevent abuse amongst users and to make sure your website visitors don't find offensive and rude behavior in your forum.

It's very important to weigh your need to communicate with the burdens of moderating and administering a forum. If you can not devote the time and effort to keep the forum user friendly and civil then you may want to consider not adding one to your site.
