Do you own a web site and want a way to give your visitors a way to share information and ideas? The first thing that might come to mind is a web forum. This is in theory the ideal setup from a technical standpoint. There are all sorts of forums available out there from the simple to complex. Technology seems to have made it easy to communicate ideas and thoughts across the web to any number of readers and users.
It is possible for inexperienced webmasters to incorporate forums into their websites very easily. Some open source forum programs offers one click installation and have partnered with web hosting providers to offer the inexperienced web user an easy way to add forums.
The actual cost of the forum is usually included free with the hosting plan and the user will usually have a control panel to perform the admin functions of the forum. This makes adding a forum to your site very inviting.
Forums can benefit certain types of sites by giving individual members the ability to interact and discuss issues that are common to all. Some platforms offer the ability to place ads to generate revenue for the forum owner...so as the users interact, the content generated can become a source of income for the webmaster.
Forums can be a burden to the owner due to certain admin tasks that must be done. One such task is that of moderating the content to filter out bad language and even hostile language among users. It is very common for forums to be dominated and controlled by a handful of members. These groups or cliques can literally control the forum to the point that other members simply do not participate due to the actions of the controlling members.
Users that may have valuable input to the forum are often afraid to make such posts because they may not be among the favored members. Problems arise quickly when the dominating group gangs up on those that don't fit in with their ideas.
There are several prejudices that can manifest within the forum. These are sometimes the basic prejudices like race, religion, and nationality - the usually ugly dividing factors amongst humans. However, within the forum community, even a small difference of opinion can result in public ridicule and humiliation from the controlling members.
One can see rather quickly why these actions really make a forum uncomfortable for users. Of course as these problems become the standard operating norm for the forum community, then the ideas and information exchanged can become rather one-sided and useless
