It really depends on what you are interested in. For me, it is Photoshop. For most of the graphics software illiterate people out there, it is Paint. There is also Paint shop pro, which I don't know much about, but I will try to review all three of them for you.
Paint - A simple software editing tool that comes with all Windows operating systems. I am not sure if it comes with macs, but it probably does. It is easy and simple for using on pictures that you want to paint in a simplistic manner. It is only good for painting pictures or just messing around.
Photoshop - Oh, where to start. Photoshop is an Adobe product that you can buy off of their site. You can also get learner editions, which are cheaper, but you cannot sell anything you make. Photoshop has too many tools and little trinkets to master them all, or even think about telling you about them all. It also has a second program that comes with it, it is called Imageready. About all it is made and good for is animation. It allows you to take an image from Photoshop and animate it in Imageready. Anyway, back to Photoshop. Photoshop has layers which you can stick different images on and do stuff you want with them. There are also a numerous amount of filters, brushes, custom brushes, random tools, and guides.
You can save images to most any type of image format. TIFF, PNG, GIF, JPG, PSD, you name it. I think that is about all on Photoshop.
Paint shop pro - Now, I told you earlier that I don't know much about this program, which it true. I am pretty sure it is similar to Photoshop, but not to the extremity as Photoshop is. I think it has similar features and tools in it. But I don't think it has a separate animation program, in fact, I don't know if you can animate anything at all. Well, that is about all I know about this program, so I hope that helped.
Those are the main programs I would recommend for teens that want to learn about graphics deeper or just want to mess around. Paint is the program to start with, but if you want to go deeper, I would go with Photoshop any day. I hope this little review has helped teens know what to look for.
Stick with it!
