Poetry: If I ruled the world

If I ruled the world, whatever I had decided to accomplish, I would move quickly, before the inevitable attempts on my life. And whatever it is YOU hope to accomplish, you first must consider how to take care of those who keep you in power. (Never mind those stooges who formed a transitional World Government following a Great Big Surprise, who then transferred all power to you - you may have to destroy some of them). You'll want to consider your legacy - and if you are ruthless enough to have achieved rule of the world, you will have to be ruthless enough to take the appropriate measures to seal your legacy, something like Beligium's King Leopold II did about a century ago, when he had the royal archives torched to cover up that nasty little Central Africa business of chopping off the hands of 10,000,000 natives. You'll want to modernise the practise of having your visage plastered over every public thoroughfare and major building (as did Saddam, and a few others) - you may wish to create an "animate" hologram image of yourself somewhere, and have it beamed into every home and other location where TV or Internet is available. I'd suggest the image be located at a place of internationally-recognised veneration - perhaps a newly-constructed temple at Al Aqsa in Jerusalem, although the Vatican might be acceptable if enough compromise with other religions were achieved. I hope none of you were dreaming of ruling the world in righteousness - you know, a chicken in every pot, and a car in every garage (President Franklin Roosevelt's promise). Not that this wouldn't be possible - after your globalist assistants have seen fit to eliminate a very large proportion of the world's population. Would they do this? Of course they would! (And, in the event, if you're worried about some of your friends, give Condoleeza Rice a call in Washington D.C. Have her telephone your acquaintances, as Joseph Goebbels did for his several Jewish friends on the eve of Hitler's entry into power, and as Ms. Rice did for San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown on September 10th 2001, warning him away from flying the next day).... So you will probably become addicted to powerful drugs in order to function each day, and eventually significant chunks of the world's peoples will have a falling out with your policies. It will all lead to a great Mideast conflagration, while you're down in Somalia trying to stamp out those cockroach-like resistant Islamic extremists. And you wanted to rule the world? Look, if you do get into a position of ruling the world, forget about uniting the world's religions, erecting a worshipful image of yourself at a simulated holy site, imposing harsh measures to preserve a cooperative slice of the planet's population, etc. Just figure that you have about 96 hours to really enjoy yourself. Study up on Caligula, or conversely, some really principled historic fellow, and emulate him. Whatever the consequences, your exalted position should probably grant you four days to do whatever it is that your heart desires. Then, those nasty principles of history and reality will kick in. And forget about your legacy.
