Guide to skiing in Northern California

ALPINE MEADOWS
This is a challenging mountain and is a favorite of locals. Cheapest lift ticket among Tahoe heavyweights.

BEAR VALLEY

This resort is under new ownership this year. It has a friendly resort which caters to families. Great place to learn.

Location: Highway 4 to Bear Valley

BOREAL
This place is snowboarder heaven day and night. It is only a short drive from Sacramento, a major plus.

DIAMOND PEAK
This North Tahoe resort features great lakeside views and typically small crowds.

DODGE RIDGE
This is a Midsize resort. A good choice for families, with plenty of steeps and moguls.

DONNER SKI RANCH
This resort is under new ownership. It is a modest resort that has a long skiing tradition dating back to 1937.

Heavenly
This is South Tahoe's heavy hitter and is the region's largest and highest resort. It has a great view of the lake and proximity to casinos an added plus.

Lifts: 30
Trails: 91

HOMEWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT
It is tough to beat its Lake Tahoe views, which are visible throughout the mountain. Lots of tree skiing.
