Brakes on todays vehicles are different than they were 20 years ago. The idea is the same-to stop the vehicle, but the technology has changed, and changed a lot. The first thing to do when contemplating what your car or truck may need to having the brakes repaired is to do your research. Check on line to find out what type of braking system is on your particular vehicle. Does your vehicle have ABS (anti-lock braking system)? If it does, is it 2 or 4 wheel? Does it have 4 wheel disc brakes, or front wheel only? These are very important details that can help you make an informed decision when choosing who you will trust to repair your braking system.
There are plenty of places that just do brakes. Beware of the ads you may hear or read. They have disclaimers that will tell you that the amazingly low price is only for 'parts designed to wear out'. All brake parts will wear out. How soon they wear out is where you can get into trouble with these places. Their definition of worn and the actual wear is not negotiable. If you do your research, your brake job will not turn out to be 10 times their amazingly low price.
Trucks use more front brake than any other vehicle on the road. This is because trucks are designed to pull things over the road. Having more bias at the front allows the vehicle to slow down quicker. But this means that the front brake pads will wear faster, causing the need to be replaced more than the rear. Make sure that the repair facility you are choosing can repair truck braking systems. Newer trucks have very complex systems, and require more than just replacing the pads.
Finally, shop the price of the parts before you take the vehicle to be repaired. You will get a better idea of what is actually the cost of the parts required to complete the job. Price the pads and/or shoes, as well as the rotors. Also get a price on the calipers and mounting hardware, and/or wheel cylinders. Some places will change these parts as part of their very expensive repair. The majority of the time all that will be required are the pads or shoes to be replaced, and to have the rotors or drums resurfaced. Some rotors are not designed to be machined, they are too thin to begin with, thus they must be replaced each time.
The most important thing to do is research. Brake jobs can range from around $100 to $1500, depending on the repair and repair facility. Choose a reputable place that offers a warranty on the parts and labor, not just a lifetime warranty on the parts. Due diligence will usually enlighten you to what you need and who you can trust.
