Why we make mistakes

We make mistakes because in doing so we learn what not to do. It's a trial and error thing. Throughout our lives we try out many different things. Some of the things that we try we don't enjoy, and so we say that we have made a mistake, but importantly we have learned that we should try something else or not repeat our mistake(s). When we do find something that's not a mistake, from the right university degree to the love of our lives, we appreciate them that much more because of our experience(s) with previous mistakes. It also gives us a greater sense of assurance that we have made the best choice(s) in our lives.

For the scientifically inclined among us, the mere fact that there is a probability of a mistake happening (however low) means that it will happen if enough time passes. We cater for such mistakes by integrating 'safety devices' into our lives. The airbags in our cars, the humongous government revenue from speeding fines, and if you care to look down for a moment you'll notice a 'backspace' key on your keyboard (!) are just a few examples. There are even huge businesses out there depending on our mistakes, such as divorce lawyers, erasers/white-out, and insurance companies.

We are human so we make mistakes. It is an important part of our learning curve. We all aim to make the minimum amount of mistakes, as that will get us the highest mark, the best reputation, or the greatest ranking. In the end we shouldn't be ashamed of making any mistakes as long as we learn from them to understand more about ourselves and the world around us. Through the process of improvement mistakes make us better people.

NOTE: To ensure I didn't make any mistakes in my writing above I'm going to do a spell check!
