Ok Dr Bob has already written a fantastic article on this, from a fairly professional point of view, i am gonna give a few tips on sound proofing with a budget of about $300.
This is not for the professional, this will not give you great acoustics or sound modeling, but it will allow you to hammer your drums, without the neighbors complaining.
Ok the first thing i did was build a stud wall within my garage, i built this really cheaply using a lot of salvaged timber from a site, and then bought a load of plaster board for next to nothing from a builders yard. I then filled the inner space with polystyrene balls, the little tiny ones made for filling bean bags and pillows. I got these straight from the manufacturer for about $100, but i did need to borrow my dads van to collect them. Then i covered the plaster board with egg carton, again i went to an egg farm and bought the big 24 egg trays and just stuck them on with wall paper paste, then painted over them. I also laid an extra layer of rock wool in the roof space above the garage. The last thing i did then was to hang big heavy curtains from ceiling to floor, at an angle across the four corners of the room, these acted a bit like bass baffles and reduced the reverb in the room. This is by no means fantastic acoustic design, it just allows me and the guys to practice when we want. Anybody looking for a professional job, follow Dr Bobs advice. Keep Rockin !
