Spyware is all of the annoying little add-ons that websites download to your computer in the background. It includes cookies, malware, spyware, and other such fun things.
In my professional and personal experience I have had very good luck with two different softwares. All of the softwares on the market will run you between $20-30 per year for updates. And almost all of them do a good job during a manual scan. So I usually check which ones have the best "resident shield" which is continuously monitoring and defending you like a bouncer at a club keeps out 'bad' people; and the second thing is HOW FREQUENT are the updates pushed out.
The corporate editions of most products are usually pushed out once per week automatically. However, you CAN manually update them on a daily basis by going to the sites and downloading the personal patches and then running them.
In my humble opinion I would have to say that AVG Anti-Spyware or Webroot SpySweeper would be the best standalone softwares to clean and protect. If you are looking at complete suites, I would recommend Zone Alarm Security Suite or Norton Internet Security. (In that order.)
As far as cleaning an infection after getting one, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do a weekly scan at least for every week you connect to the Internet and use your computer. If you go on vacation and the computer is unplugged and turned of you didn't catch anything and are safe.
One other thing, there are a LOT of very nasty spywares out there and the people making them are getting better at making them harder to kill. After you scan them from that computer, I have found it necessary to pull the main hard drive out and clean it from another computer. When you do this use a USB enclosure so that the other computer is up, running and already protected before you add the sick drive. This is the same method for remove computer viruses 100% too.
Good luck out there.
