All too often I witness students having a difficult time transitioning from elementary school to middle school. Students go from having one teacher and one class to 6 different teachers and classes. The adjustment time can increase when student's expectations are not met.

Students need to understand that they will be dealing with a different teacher for each subject. Parents should encourage their child to get to know their teachers and to always ask for help. Students are used to getting more attention from their elementary school teachers, therefore they should be reminded that a teacher from junior high has more students to take care of.

In middle school, students have to know that they will have to increase their study time and learn how to manage their time wisely. Parents should instill good study habits in their child before they enter middle school.

It is important for students to be able to build relationships with a variety of people. This is an excellent time for students to develop friendships that are positive and supportive.

A great way to put a student at ease it to take them to school before school starts and show them around. Students can find all of their classes in advance.
