Nutrition tips for keeping your teeth healthy

Nutrition is a word used a lot when talking about taking care of one's self. It plays a big part in maintaining healthy teeth too. When people say nutrition what do they mean, or in particular, what affects your teeth's heath?

Of course nutrition always means your diet. So what you eat can affect your teeth and their heath. Obviously a well balanced diet that provides the minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients essential for healthy teeth and gums is preferred, but we are not all prefect. There are other ways of getting the nutrition you need than having three balanced meals per day.

Fluoride is the most well known nutrient that is essential to keeping healthy teeth. If you live in an area where your water is cleaned then fluoride has most likely been added. For those of you who don't, fluoride is included in almost every kind of toothpaste and even some mouthwashes available. Fluoride supplements are also available; however you need to be careful as too much fluoride can cause mottling of the teeth.

In addition to fluoride calcium and vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, are very important to keep your teeth strong and gums healthy. Dairy products, almonds, and dark green leafy vegetables are excellent sources of calcium. And the best source of vitamin D is moderate sun exposure. Phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin A, and beta carotene are also needed and easily obtained through a daily multivitamin.

The most important nutrition factor is your sugar intake. Sugar is on of the leading causes of cavities and tooth decay. It is most dangerous when in drinks as many people do not brush after having a cup of juice or pop though the sugar stays on your teeth. Limit your intake of sweet drinks and snacks. Do not drink anything but water before bed after you have brushed your teeth. It is also suggested that if you are to drink sugary juices or pops that you do not sip them as it prolongs the period in which your teeth are exposed.

When it comes to keeping your body healthy nutrition is most important. While these tips only focus on how you can keep your teeth healthy, the best way to stay in health is to have a balanced diet. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind and teeth.
