The town of Jackson (sometimes mistakenly, and lovingly, called Jackson Hole) is located in a 50 mile long valley that runs alongside the breathtaking Teton Mountain Range. This little gem of a town is considered by many the "last of the Old West", where you will still find people sitting on their front porches in rocking chairs, businesses with staff who actually care enough to know your name, and a charming atmosphere that is indicative of a place where time has seemingly stood still.
Jackson is definitely a "small town", and the residents like it that way. While they are more than accommodating to the many visitors who come to experience their beautiful little town, ski the picturesque mountains nearby and spend a little time reminiscing about times gone by, they have managed to keep their little community true to its western heritage. If you want to see the world's largest ball of barbed wire or an archway made of elk antlers, you have come to the right place!
During the summer months, visitors are greeted with everything from horseback riding at several local ranches, fishing, Whitewater rafting and even golfing. The weather is beautiful, usually steadily in the mild 70's, and the air is some of the freshest and most crisp that your lungs will ever breathe. If you enjoy hiking, Jackson Hole offers some of the best, and in the spirit of the "Old West" exploration is encouraged.
The winter in Jackson is all about snow! There are several world class ski resorts in the Jackson Hole area, where beginners and experts alike can be challenged and exhilarated. For those who feel that skiing is just "not their thing", there is another host of activities including dog sledding, cross country skiing, snow mobiling and simply sight seeing.
In celebration of its Western Heritage, there are several annual events that include the the presentation of authentic Stagecoaches, Western horseman in traditional clothing, hay rides and much more. This town is one that is centered around the idea of "community", and during these events, it seems as though the entire community pitches in to create a good time for all.
Jackson Hole is certainly the "Best in the West" in terms of places to live if you're interested in a lifestyle that celebrates togetherness, friendliness, heritage and a general sense of well being. I challenge anyone to walk the streets of Jackson Hole without a smile on their face!
