Tips for developing healthy homework habits

Homework is more important than classwork and neither of these is optional. I have 19 years of education behind me and I know about homework. Make the decision early in the semester to be enthusiastic about your classes. Here is the best way to develop healthy homework habits: Do all your homework, everyday, and make this an integral part of how you live your life while you are in school.

Sitting in class watching the professor work problems on the board is one thing; but, can you do the same thing? On test day, you will need to be able to do it all on your own. Make a commitment to yourself that you will do all your homework, for each class, all semester. You will not let yourself get behind. You will not ignore any of your classesyou will do the whole homework program.

Prepare your home surroundings to be conducive to doing homework. Plan your dinner and evening plans around the fact that you will be studying. Weekends are not a good time to catch up' on your home work. You will want to do other things Friday and Saturday nightSunday is when you do the homework for Monday's class.

There are two types of classes that require homework: reading classes and math and science, or problems and exercises' type classes. For classes that require chapters of reading, plan on reading the material more than once. Multiple passes through assigned reading materials are how you will learn the content. Read it first, quickly, with attention to the outline in the table of contents and the review questions at the end. Then, read the material again, taking notes and carefully analyzing the information. Finally, read the chapters another time closer to test time. Your brain will consume and digest the information much more effectively; you will be much happier with this approach.

For classes in which there are exercises like math or accounting problems, do all the exercises everyday so you won't get behind in the learning process. Each set of problems teaches you something new and once you get behind, it can be impossible to get caught up. Don't trust that you understand simply because you are able to follow along with the teacher when she works problems in class. You need practice doing each type of problem by yourself!

Pretend you are in a Nike commercial and Just Do It, everyday.
And, to be sure, take good notes in class so that you can do a good job when you are on your own at home. Make these plans early; accept that you are a student do what it takes to be a good onebe the best!
