Understanding the psychology of atheism

I am writing to this heading for two reasons. Principally I am fed up with reading 'off message' articles from Christians and other believers and secondly because I feel I am being misrepresented as an atheist myself.

There are some things that should be clearly understood by all. Firstly there are good and bad atheists just as there are good and bad Christians, good and bad Muslims and good and bad Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, etc. Children tend to believe in Santa Claus when they are little, but they do not become bad people once they grow out of that belief.

Atheists do not 'blame' God (whoever he or she may be in your mind) for theirs or anyone else's bad luck in life. It is simply not possible. If you do not believe in a god how can you blame one?!

A note to those who are critical of atheism. Would you be as disparaging of a Buddhist as you are of an atheist? You should be. Buddhism has plenty of good, sound moral common sense, but no god (shock, horror!) Sometimes I call myself a Humanist - but I'm not entirely comfortable with that term maybe that, too would be more acceptable to some.

I do not steal, I have never killed and although I have certainly transgressed from time to time over my half century plus on this planet I have tried my utmost to be a good, moral, kind and helpful citizen.

Oh - and just for the record I do not have two heads, green skin or horns!
