The dark road of the Goddess: The anti-feminist Pagan path

and name, she forces us to reach into free space and experience the unknown.

As she says 'No!' to what was, and 'Yes!' to what isn't quite yet, she forces us to jump the inevitable gap between the past and the future.

Transformation always involves a death of the old, a moment of total unknown voidness when we are naturally afraid, and a breathless leap into renewal when we are 'reborn'. It is imperative that we surrender to the death and let go into the unknown, before we an experience and appreciate the rebirth. It is this amazing doorway between death and life that the Dark Goddess guards." [/i]

(Vicky Noble, "The DArk Goddess: Remembering the Sacred" in _woman of power_, Issue 12:

Thus, the Dark Goddesses govern the processes of transformation, death and renewal or rebirth, as well as the "hidden" or "Dark" aspects of the psyche and psychic arts, such as Divination, Shamanic Journeying, Banishments and Releasing.

THE DARK GODDESSES: GUIDES TO THE "DARK ROAD"

Diana may perhaps be understood as a Dark Goddess, but much better known as Dark Goddesses are Persephone, Hekate, Kali-Ma, Medusa, and Lilith. Let's discuss them each in more depth:

1. PERSEPHONE:
The maiden daughter of the Grain Goddess, Demeter, Persephone became the Queen of the Underworld.

Having left everything familiar in search of individuation to find her self identity and purpose, Persephone can act as both a guide and initiatrix as we follow Her through the darkness, into the 'underworld' of the psyche.

"Sink down, sink down, sink deeper and deep,
Into eternal, primordial sleep.
Sink down, forget, be still and draw apart
Into the inner earth's most secret heart.
Drink of the waters of Persephone,
The secret well beside the sacred tree......"
Dion Fortune, from "Moon Magic" 10

The Sagewoman Cauldron published one of the most delightful and insightful pieces on Persephone a few years ago:

The Coming of Winter
But what if Persephone chose the underworld
as her only chance to run away from home?
After all, if your mother is a fertility queen
who controls every living thing on earth
and she sets you up as a perfect virgin
eternally teenage goddess of spring,
doomed to a circle of boring nymphets
and wimpy sorority dances in chiffon,
what the hell else can you possibly do
but turn radical?.....
.....Up drives this dude
in a funny helmet and a black convertible
nothing like the creep you've been warned about.
He bows, grins, and asks if you'd consider
sharing his job, ruling the worlds of the dead.
