In my opinion, one of the most brilliant things of the Harry Potter series is growing up with the characters, getting to know them, empathizing with them, loving them. In spite of this, I find myself selecting, not Harry, Ron or Hermione as my favourite character, nor Hagrid, Dumbledore or Snape. Instead, I have opted for a character that was not introduced until the fifth book; (The Order of the Phoenix) Luna Lovegood.
Personally, I think she is one of the most fantastic creations that has come from J.K's works of art. I fell in love with Luna's character when J.K first talks of her. I felt immediate empathy for Luna, who has lost her mother and is often made fun of and teased by the other students for her strange dress sense and supposedly "looney" father. The fact of the matter is, that it is this that makes us love Luna. With her "dirty-blond hair" and her "silvery", "misty" eyes, Luna has a knack for understanding the feelings of her friends whom she holds in such high regard. Harry who notes her rather blunt honesty, but this is one of the characteristics of Luna that makes her so wonderful. The things she says and the throw-away manner in which she says things often makes me laugh when reading (and re-reading) the books. She speaks as though she couldn't care less what people think of her, is inspiring, and I believe that Rowling does this on purpose in order to get the message across that people should not be self conscious of what others think of them, and to be themselves.
She is so conscious of the feelings of her friends and tries to comfort them and do whatever she can to make things alright (After Sirius' death especially). This sense of helpfulness and dependency and the way that Rowling describes how she has such a burning devotion to her friends ensures that you must like her!
Whilst she doesn't do anything dramatically heroic like Harry, Hermione or Ron, Luna is one of those characters that makes the book what it is. Her quirky habits and her wonderful spirit that she shares with her friends, along with her bravery and devotion makes her my favorite character in Harry Potter.
