We all have dreams and believe me, I have seen a lot too. I had come across a lot of times when money was the biggest and the most important thing.
When I started studying, I was at the top of the world because I was in a very recognized university and had lots of leisure time. To be in the "top" group, money was important. If you didn't want to be left out of a group event or just simply had to go out for a rush-hour lunch, you had to have money.
Later my friends were gone and I had to learn to stand on my own two feet. Was it easy? Definitely not! I thought that looking for a job will be easy but it was so difficult. I had to rush to the bookshops and computer shop, either to get stationery or get access to Internet for sending over my resumes. When I finally got a job, I saw a light of hope but the bad part was it ended too suddenly. After getting another job, I got a bit secure. Just to remind my self, it was a pleasure to receive whatever amount of wages was in my hands but see it finish so fast was another issue. I couldn't go outing anymore and at times even paying the rent was impossible. That caused me to work overtime. When I did, having to get to bed was the most important thing and not thinking about your health. On special occasions I used to get some food and treat myself in my room, feeling the delight in my heart.
That magic also finished. My job was changed again and my wages got from bad to worse. I used to get up at 5am and set up breakfast, clean the house so I have little to do when i returned in the afternoons, have a shower and get to the main road by 6.30am to get in the bus. It would reach the city by 8am and at times it got delayed. I could not even purchase a fridge so every lunch time when the others were having lunch, I used to think what I would cook for dinner. And if I had to buy bread or veggies, I had to rush off during my lunch hour to get those things. It seemed that everyday there was something lacking, and saving even $5.00 at the end of the week was amazing. As soon as it was 5pm, I had to rush to the bus-stop and roughly reach home at the earliest by 6.30pm.
I used to get so stressed but I had to cook and at times whatever I cooked seemed like the most delicious food because of the effort put in it. My friends grew distance because they were scared that I might ask them for money. MY flatmates just to go out and enjoy while I stayed back and sometimes sat outside watching the stars, thinking when would I be lucky. The only thing I used to keep an eye out for when my flatmates went out was if they returned, they might have some fancy leftovers. I felt so bad because to others it may have seemed like you were a begging for it. Some weekends I had to head back home and usually instead of giving anything to my family, I used to ask them for the fare back home. There used to be arguments because of that and I had to wear my sunnies to hide my tears as I went back. The pain was so strong that your heart felt so heavy and it seemed like you were a loner. That pain had become my cause me looking for 'greener pastures' and today I have a well-paid job, I am able to send money home without a second thought!
