Before making the major decision to purchase a new dining room table, consider a few important questions.

1) How long do you really plan on using this table? Is it something you plan to keep as an heirloom to pass down to your children or is it something you are hoping to use for ten years and replace?

2) Is the table going to be used for formal or casual dining?

3) Will the table be used for anything other than eating? Such as kids doing art work.

4)How many people do you hope to sit at this table?

5)Do you want the table to have leaves so it can be expanded for serving larger groups of people?

6) What is the shape of your room and what is the shape of the table?

7) What materials do you want the table to be constructed with? Are you looking for dark or light stained wood?

After you have pondered these questions, travel to the furniture stores and start to develop a sense of the styles of that are available to you and the types of chairs you like best. Take digital pictures of the tables and chairs that are in the running so you will have a reference at home. Take measurements and record them. Then when you are home, use tagboard or a large sheet of paper in the dimensions of the table top. This will help you develop a sense of how it will fit in your dining room.

There are a few characteristics that you do not want in a table. Don't get a tile top table because the grout grooves are always inconvenient. Make sure the chairs are very sturdy especially if they have any spindles. Take a look at how the spindles are attached/glued to the chair. Take a look at the construction of the table from underneath in case it is constructed very cheaply on the under side.

The daily dining room table is usually the hub of a family's daily life so it select one that is strong, comfortable,and easy to clean.
