Short stories: Romance

Love in the Twilight Years

Jack and Milly were well into the "Twilight Years" of their lives when they met for the first time at Serenity Valley, the assisted living facility that they had moved into two and three months before. Neither were their because they wanted to be. Rather because their children had felt it best.

At 87 Jack was still a handsome devil with a full head of white hair, sparkling blue eyes, and a quirky smile that could still charm the ladies. He had a great sense of humor and was still "the life of the party". Having been a stock broker most of his life, he was not hurting financially. But when he was diagnosed with Cancer a couple of years before, and began having trouble with daily activities, along with some memory loss, his children decided it would be best if he had twenty four hour care available to him. Comfy overstuffed sofas and chairs were scattered around in clusters, and alone, giving the place a "homey" feel. Decorated by a professional in Southwest and Native American designs, it was a place where a man could feel comfortable. The offices and front desk hardly noticeable, were tucked into discreet corners. Three stories high, the building housed 105 beautiful apartments. And the dining room was huge! Expertly arranged, it also boasted a full time chef.

Jack was comfortable at Serenity Valley, but he was a little lonely. Being a newcomer he was still getting to know the staff and residents. He had a couple of friends that he ate with on a regular basis, but neither were very outgoing. He participated in activities when he could, bingo night, movie night, bible studies, and an occasional trip to town on the facility shuttle. His children had also decided he should
