Poetry: The masks we wear

"Do You Know This Face?"

I stare at you through narrowed eyes
Through the slits of the mask I wear
I play innocent so well
Wide dark eyes, pouty lips, careless hair

For the moment, I am your virgin
Kneeling before you, my lips around
You, worshiping your flesh
Teeth innocently grazing your thighs

In the next moment, I am your confidante
Teasing, coaxing, listening without judging
Loving without condemnation
I am your fountain, your confessional

A moment beyond, I am your whore
Riding you for your money's worth
I am your dirty girl, your beast, your creature
The depository for lust and frustration

Further on, I am a balm to your weary soul
My tongue caressing, soothing, talking
Claiming your body without commitment
A willing surrogate for your need

Finally, I lay tangled up in you
Your sleep is restless, so I hold you
Warm flesh caressing each other
Until we are mad with desire again

In the end, we are outlets for our needs
Filling our voids, giving each other comfort
As effective as a band aid on our souls
With our masks safely in place
