Teen advice: How to decide if you should get a tattoo

Tattoos are much more acceptable in today's society than they ever have been before. Wanting a tattoo is one thing. Actually going out and getting one is another. There are a number of things to consider before you decide to go under the needle.

Tattoos permanently alter your body. Although procedures exist to remove them, those procedures are much more costly than getting the tattoo. It is imperative that you understand that prior to getting inked. Once it's done, it's done. The odds of ever getting it *undone* are not high. If you choose to go through with it, pick a design with some kind of significance and importance to you as a person. The choice you make will be etched into your flesh forever. Make sure you are comfortable enough with it to live with your choice.

There are some very minor risks to consider in your tattoo pursuit. Infection is a possibility. Unsterile needles and an unclean environment can lead to an unpleasant experience. The possibility of infection is the main reason that the American Blood Bank requires a year long waiting period between getting a tattoo and donating blood. Allergic reactions are rare but do occasionally occur. Reactions are difficult to treat due to the pigments being hard to remove from the skin. Do some research and shop around to find the cleanest, most informed studio in your area if you decide to go through with it.

Dissatisfaction is the most common risk factor involved in getting a tattoo. What seemed like a good idea at the time, sometimes becomes a bad idea the following day. However, getting the tattoo removed is a complicated and expensive process. It is necessary to keep in mind that the tattoo may not look exactly the same way on your back or shoulder as it does hanging on the wall of the studio. Changes in your body will also affect the appearance of the tattoo. Colors fade and skin texture changes over time changing the tattoo as well.

There are a number of helpful questions to ask yourself before getting a tattoo. What are your reasons for getting a tattoo? Does the tattoo mean something to you? Are you being pressured or encouraged to get a tattoo by someone else? Are you willing to live with an indelible mark for the rest of your life? Deciding to obtain a tattoo is an important and personal decision. Weigh all of the pros and cons before you take that final step.
