Quick, hide, the Go Green folks are here! Watch out, those Earth Shoes hurt the toes! Honestly and with all joking aside, the amount of ways a family can help the environment are vast. We're not just talking about cutting the plastic soda can holders so birds don't hurt themselves; we're talking about real changes that add up quickly over time.
First thing's first: write a lot of notes while in front of the computer? Are Post-it Notes sticking to every surface on your fridge and computer desk, forehead and wall? Have you tried using the Notepad on your computer instead? Try this, go to your desktop and create a brand new folder named Important Notes. Double click to open it, and create seven more folders, one for each day of the week. Now whenever you need to save a note, use notepad and save the note into the appropriate day.
Another easy way to save the earth little by little is recycling. Make some space next to your trashcan for a recycling bin. Instead of throwing away your milk jugs, your soda cans and bottles, even your TV dinner trays (those are plastic too,) throw them in the new bin. You'll be amazed at how much a family can recycle in a day, a week, or a month!
So I can save the planet AND my hard earned money?
Oh yes you can! Daddy always told you to turn the light switch off when you left a room. Try it! Keep tabs on your electric bill and compare your costs before and after a little creative light switching. Also, lowering the brightness of the bulbs you use by even a little bit can help your energy use. Using 75-watt bulbs? Switch to 40 watt! After a week you won't even notice the difference.
Seriously though, if you think for one second that going Green is hard, requires activism or a certain political lean, remember what the "movement" is about. It's about preserving and prolonging the health of our planet, and each other. If one person from every home in America, every home in the World even tried daily to be more respectful to the Earth, oh the possibilities for a bright future we'd have.
