Everyday we are judged by the numbers in our lives. We are sifted and scrutinized through a system based on our address, credit score, bank balance, etc. We live in a world where, at times, we are nothing more than just the sum of our numbers; for this reason alone grading in colleges should not be abolished. Some might use the above reason as a basis for the converse side of the argument, asserting that students should be relieved of this reality, but how then, can we view college as a preparation for the "real world" when we are not exposing students to "real world" judgment?

Grades are more than just numbers. Grades represent effort, dedication, and drive that a student has to complete their work to the best of their ability. But more than that, grades can serve as the ultimate confidence booster for college students. Knowing that you put your all into a project and seeing that project come to fruition with an A, I can tell you, is something that I remember fondly from college. The grading system is not only necessary in schools, but also provide a microcosm of what the real world will be like. Like I said before, we are judged by our numbers in the real world, and learning that lesson in college is much more beneficial than learning it too late.

We must first admit that we all judge people. We all categorize people and that might not necessarily be a bad thing. For classification purposes, or organizational purposes, whatever they may be, we put people into groups so that they are easy to deal with. What better standard than grades? They are a completely unbiased way to judge a person. I understand that sometimes grades don't reflect effort or things like that, but we simply have to understand that yes, judging based on grades is a flawed system, but it is better than most that are in place today.

Grades provide an unbiased standard of judgment that is essential for not only real world preparation, but also personal satisfaction.
