were tight, and ready to dash into a marathon run. What I didn't expect was Selena's dad to chuckle like Santa.
"Oh, the little boy with hair like yours!" he exclaimed. Under all that pressure, I still managed to feel annoyed. "I gave it to him, he was looking for a 'very important letter' as he put it." Mr. Grant chuckled again.
I was bewildered. It must have shown on my face, as Selena, who was always more intelligent than me, tugged my hand to get up.
"Thanks daddy, bye" she said as she managed to move me from my frozen pose.
"Wait dear, what were you really here for?" Mr.Grant asked Selena gently.
"Oh, Mary thought it was your important documents, so she wanted to let you know Mitch threw it away." she replied. Mary thought' indeed! I complained silently.
I figured out by then Mr.Grant was pretty much a wrinkled teddy bear, rather than a fierce crocodile, so I eased up and babbled, "Selena was afraid to tell you, so I volunteered," I couldn't help boasting, just a little. I was pretty brave wasn't I?
Mr. Grant looked puzzled, as Selena muttered something hateful under her breath at me.
"Sweety, why would you be afraid to approach me?" Her dad asked, sounding hurt.
"You might've got angry and shouted.." she whispered, looking at her feet. I felt bad for her, and felt like slapping my big mouth.
Mr. Grant got up to hold Selena's hand, "My dear, I think you are very mistaken. I was pretty busy, and I might have said something harshly once or twice, but that doesn't mean I am a grouchy, old Daddy whom you have to be scared of mm?" He said gently, wrapping his arms around Selena. He gave me a friendly smile, and I returned it before I excused myself out.
I left both dad and daughter together. It was true, my Mum shouted at me too, but she always hugged me later. I understood that Selena was having a problem figuring that out by herself. So much for intelligent, mathematical brains.
As for me, I ran to find Mitch, who was still looking sulky as he sat near the bedroom window . I couldn't help hugging him. He wasn't guilty, he was just too dimwitted not to tell us that Selena's dad gave him that paper.
I felt too relieved to tease him about it. I also made a vow to myself not to behave like a crocodile' and bite his head off'. He was a pretty great, sweet brother.
