SUMMER TROUBLE

This is just perfect, I thought to myself as I lay on the beach, sunbathing. I had been waiting the whole year, just to get the perfect tan. I grabbed the opportunity when Selena Grant, my beautiful best mate who was also the best student in the whole 6th grade, invited me to spend the summer at her beach cottage.

Thank goodness for rich friends! Otherwise I would have been paler than the white moon. Of course, I could always visit the beach, but that would be a pretty tough way to get a tan. You see, I lived eons away from the beach, and without a driving license as I still have several more years to get it , I would have been just a plain Mary Jones, without a tan, sitting home, bored to death.

Well, nothing could be that perfect, right? True, there is a dark side to everything. I had my annoying, little brother, Mitch tag along after me. Mum was smart that way. She knew how to make me squirm.

"Mary, if you don't take Mitch with you, AND look after him, forget Selena and her beach cottage," she had stated in her clipped tone. I knew there was no way out of it. She left me no choice; it was either going back to school, looking like a nerd, or putting up with Mitch-the-headache.

So there I was, lying with my sunglasses, lotion on my skin, and smiling because Mitch was playing somewhere with Selena's sister Kina. Safely out of my way, without embarrassing me in front of all the cute hunks. I sighed, blissfully.

No, I wasn't meant to enjoy with the little brat anywhere close by. I didn't lay there smiling at the sun for too long. Just as I was drifting into a relaxing nap, I was rudely awakened by Selena's earsplitting screech.

I didn't even bother to ask what the crisis was. I mean, did people ask "hey, what's wrong?" when a tornado is twisting right before you?

"Mitch!" I screamed from the top of my lungs. I sat up, and removed my glasses. Selena was marching towards me, dripping wet for some reason, with a sullen looking Mitch ambling behind her. Kina stood a few feet away, looking nervous.

"Mary! My dad's gonna skin me alive!" Selena cried, her doll-like face twisted into a snarl.

"What did he do now?" I asked dejectedly, staring at Selena's wide, emerald eyes. I couldn't help thinking how she still looked like a blond, cover model, while huffing and puffing like a wet dog.

"Nothing, except that he shipped Daddy's papers to Atlantis!" She thundered, staring daggers at Mitch, who shrank back, looking scared.
"Alright Sel, calm down, tell me
