How to deal with learning disabilities in basic math skills

even help with homework. If your child has just learned how to count to ten for example, ask them to give you eight bananas while you are grocery shopping. Verbally describing math problems is also an option when teaching basic math concepts. Simplify the question as much as possible and highlight words that are significant. Because basic math skills depend on memory, playing games that involve matching cards or remembering a certain number of items may also be beneficial.

It is also effective to get your child in a daily routine. The student should complete work in a quiet, calm, and comfortable area at the same time everyday. Make sure that you are available to help questions and to provide praise and reassurance. The idea is to help the student as much as possible without causing stress or apprehension. Eliminating distraction will also help the child to focus. As well, working for several short periods may be more effective than concentrating for long periods of time.

Basic math skills are essential to success throughout life. Even though the concepts seem simple and your child doesn't seem to be trying, children with learning disabilities in basic math skill can be easily overwhelmed. New concepts need to be introduced gradually and simplified as much as possible. Remember, as well, if a child is relaxed and the tasks seem enjoyable, the results will be much more positive for both parents and students.
