There are many ways to reduce the possibility of being given date rape drugs, but there is only one sure way to avoid them. In any situation where there are drinks served, first of all, if you are underage, don't accept any beer or more potent alcoholic drinks at all. Men and boys often target young girls who are not used to hard drinks, and induce them to overindulge.
After three or four potent drinks, inexperienced young girls can be vulnerable to sexual attack without the attacker needing date rape drugs. In a loud and exciting party atmosphere, the temptation is there, and if you're underage, don't give in to persuasion or pressure to join in on the so-called fun and games. The one certain way to protect yourself is to drink only bottled sodas and juices that you observe being opened in front of you or ones you open yourself.
For the older girl or woman, especially if she's attending a large event in a home or crowded commercial bar or nightclub, the danger of being given date rape drugs multiplies. If most of the partygoers are strangers, any woman is vulnerable. If you are a teetotaler or beer drinker, as recommended above, stick to bottled drinks you open yourself or observe being opened. In a large gathering, never leave any drink unattended. Ask a friend to watch it, or when you return, get a new drink.
If you are with others who are friends or otherwise well-known to you, agree in advance to watch out for each other and keep observant for signs that any of you is feeling drugged or deliberately induced to overindulge. Protect that person by getting her away from the area, to sleep it off while being guarded at all times. Some date rape drugs, such as Rohypnol and some sleep-inducing compounds, if given in large doses can be fatal. If the condition appears to be more serious, be sure to get immediate medical help and/or call 911 promptly.
Simple precautions and with the help of friends, any social occasion can be much more enjoyable if the worry of date rape drugs can be reduced to a minor concern or absolutely zero.
