After eagerly finishing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" to the last page and last word, I have concluded that Professor Snape is in fact a "good guy" for many reasons.
First of all, when Snape heard that Voldemort would harm Lily Potter, Harry's mother, he went to Dumbledore and became a spy for the Order of the Phoenix. His intentions may be a bit selfish seeing as he was in love with Lily, but even after her death, despite how much he disliked Harry's father and Harry himself, he continued to protect Harry and follow Dumbledore's orders. Snape chose to fight for the good side and even die for the cause even though he gained a fair amount of trust from Voldemort already and would have risen even higher in ranks if he stayed loyal. Second of all, Snape killed Dumbledore, someone he trusted and respected, because Dumbledore asked him to, because it would secure Voldemort's trust in him. In Snape's memory that he gave to Harry before he died, Snape shows that he in fact, cares for Dumbledore deeply in his fury at Dumbledore for putting on the cursed ring.

Therefore, how can we look at Snape, who first lost the love of his life to his bully, then to the master he served, then spent the rest of his unhappy life protecting the son of his love, and finally suffering a painful death, evil? J.K. Rowling herself has made it clear about how she feels about Snape by having Harry name his son after Snape in the epilogue. Since Harry Potter is JKR's creation, if she thinks of Snape as Harry's friend, shouldn't we as readers do the same?
