People buy hybrid vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, to get an astonishing 60 miles per gallon. Question: why would anyone buy a hybridized, gas-guzzling, monster-car-crushing truck? Answer: hybrids improve our environment, save gas, and increase our country's independence. And, sometimes, you just want a truck...

For the average consumer, the 2007 hybrid truck contenders are the Chevy Silverado Classic Hybrid and the GMC Sierra Classic Hybrid. They share many fine qualities.

They have the same city/ highway gas mileage: 18/ 21 mpg (2WD) and 17/ 19 mpg (4WD). The hybrid versions save 10% in fuel economy over conventional models. This 90-gallon annual gas savings could make an impressive contribution across the USA, especially considering that trucks are one of the fastest growing markets.

They have standard 295 hp, 5.3 liter V-8 engines with a four-speed transmission and options for a 400 hp, 6.2 liter V-8 engine with a six-speed transmission. Their Light Hybrid System shuts off the gas when the truck slows down and when the brakes are applied, the electric motor acts as a generator that stores the braking energy for later usage. This system doesn't qualify as a PURE hybrid, but, hey, close enough: it saves gas and reduces pollution. The electric motor also provides portable power, a handy feature for your jobsite, campsite or home (during power outages).

The great variety of models has been further upgraded for improved exterior style, bed sizes, cabin quality/ space, towing capacities, and gas mileage. Consumers would have been happier if the side curtain airbags and electronic stability system were standard features, not just an expensive afterthought.

Other amenities include power windows, sonar parking and remote-starting. Remote-start allows you to warm up your truck while you're inside your house, getting ready to go. Nice perk for cold days.

The marvels of OnStar satellite technology can also open your doors if you get locked out, or, help you find your truck if it gets stolen. And, if you're blond, there's another option called BlondeStar that can help you cope with the day-to-day challenges of just being blonde.

So, how to choose between these two trucks?

Silverado has made a reputation for itself with many prestigious awards, but Sierra has also achieved many kudos with consumer satisfaction ratings.

Silverado has spacious interior room, large storage consoles and a smooth SUV-like ride. One performance review gave it an overall rating of 4 out of 5. The Silverado's reputation goes a long way, but maybe consumers want more bang for the buck.

Sierra seems to have a cleaner look, better ergonomics and a performance comparable with the Silverado. One performance review gave it an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5.
Silverado's MSRP range is $25,960 to $31,665. Sierra's is $26,555 to $32,025. Not much difference, but maybe Sierra has that extra edge to justify the price difference.

Either way, they're both great trucks. Going hybrid can be your tangible contribution towards a cleaner planet.
