Is 40 really the new 30?

by Chris Pavey

Created on: August 14, 2007

40 has to be the new 30. Why? Because I'm 30, and I still feel like I'm 20. Which means that if I feel like I'm 20 now, then by the time I'm 40, I'm seriously only going to feel like I'm 30. It's simple logic.

I've recently been watching Mark Philippoussis' TV dating show, the Age of Love. It hasn't received the best reviews, but come on, there could be nothing better. 40 year old women, prancing around in skimpy swimwear costumes and gorgeous eveningwear, competing with young 20 year old women in various physical pursuits for the attention of a 30 year old man, and beating them I might add. If that show does nothing else, it gives women, and men for that matter, confidence in this new world, where being 40 is really just when you're beginning to peak. It's certainly not the beginning of the end that we once thought of it as. Oh, and how gorgeous is that Jayanna, and the toning on that 48 year old puts us all to shame. But I digress!

I often think about where my 20's went. But in truth, I know where my 20's went. They were spent at university, and travelling and partying, and having one hell of a time finding out who I was. I'm 30 now and I know who I am. That's great. The 20's were a success for me. But I still have no idea as to what I want. I don't know what I want to do with my life, and I'm 30! What I want to do in my life is the question that shall need to be answered in my 30's. And then in my 40's, I'll do it!

I'll be married in my 30's, not my 20's as once was the norm. I'll buy a house in my 30's, not my 20's as once was the norm. I'll have children in my 30's, not my 20's as once was the norm. We post baby boomers, or whatever you'd like to call us, have taken a decade off. We've had a 10 year break from this wonderful thing called life. We're only really getting started in our 30's. The 40's are ready and waiting for us, but we're not ready for them. They'll just have to wait until we reach the big five-0. We'll see about joining the ranks of middle-age then.
