I am a firm believer that one should build a system from scratch, instead of buying a ready made PC. The advantage to building one's own system is that it can tailored to the needs of the user. There are wide range of barebone systems available on the market. Dressing up a barebone is easy with a good CPU, I prefer AMD, large Hard Disk Drives, your kind of Floppy and CD Read, Write, or Play drives, Universal Serial Bus drives, Optical mice, PCI Sound and AGP Video Cards, other Peripheral Component Interconnect cards such as fast Ethernet Card, and ample Random Access Memory that could almost cost as much as a brand new prefabbed machine.

I built my PC more than 3 or4 years ago, and so far the only things that I needed to replace were the old fashioned mice with an optical mouse and one HDD drive that failed. I was fortunate to be able to buy two sticks of 512MB of RAM on Sale for $80 Dollars with a $40 Dollar rebate for each stick from Tiger Direct.
In closing, the drawback to building your own machine is that one has limited Warranty for the purchased parts and there isn't a customer service agent to call when problems arise. However, there are plenty books available for one to educate himself or herself, and learn to become your own computer technician and/or troubleshooter.
