Dining out: Keeping it healthy and delicious

When I dine out, I always make choices that are healthy and delicious. What's fun about this is how easy it is! Remember: order what your body is hungry for and eat what you like.

Our bodies crave what we need. In other words: the healthiest food for us at any given moment is usually the food which we think about when facing the choice. This is not to say that when I face the window of pies at the grocery store, if one looks good to me, it is healthy. No, what I stress here is that our bodies know what they need; namely: if I am carbohydrate deficient, I will be hungry for fruit, bread, pasta, potatoes, or rice. Those are the healthy foods for me when I need and want them. On the flip-side, if I'm pumping iron or otherwise protein deficient, I will seek out beef, chicken, fish, eggs, or whatever meat I lean toward, naturally.

When I dine out, I order what I want. Eating in a restaurant is about instant gratification and luxury spending. If I can afford to pay a cook to go shopping and cook my dinner and clean the dishes, why pay for something less than my immediate desire? When I lift weights, I start with a steak. When I am training for a marathon, I start with pasta. These are the things that define healthy for me at the moment.

Do I need to tell you that I eat dessert? Of course, I do! When I look at the menu, I determine if the restaurant offers a dessert that I like. If there is no chocolate cake or apple pie, I usually do not waste my luxury-item calories on their desserts. I want my experience at a restaurant to be healthy AND delicious-if they cannot help me satisfy these two desires, I do not return. I love eating out.
