I work in mental health and I am passionate about what I do. One does not enter the public pay sector of mental health in hopes of becoming rich. I entered this government funded sector with the hope of providing exceptional care to those who are most in need. Words and ideas such as hope, ability, strength, choice, resiliency, recovery, healing, integrity, and compassion are words that drive my passion.
I have been disillusioned. What I now know is a local government who does not see quality care as the key. this is what I have been told: "people don't want the best sandwich in the deli; they don't want a panini sandwich, they are fine with peanut butter." This statement was made by someone who has been given power to make decisions about many vulnerable people. Even now when I type this, I am taken back by its implications and how it translates to the consumers that I serve. What is being said is that the most vulnerable amongst us only deserve a peanut butter sandwich; or mediocre care.
I always thought of myself as an intelligent and logical thinker. However, this makes no sense to me. If we give the most needy; the most vulnerable the best quality care, isn't there a better chance for recovery, and a better chance for a better tomorrow? Do we still not get that? Or is it my disillusionment and this is really how others think.
I don't know what to do. I am feeling saddened for the consumers and their families. I want to make a difference and movement towards change. I want to give someone more in need my panini sandwich.
