This may sound totally crazy but here it goes. PUT YOUR NAME ON IT! Yes, that's right, your name and phone number. Don't mess with your address because nobody is just going to ship your luggage to you without talking to you first. Don't use those silly paper tags they give you at the ticket counter either. (unless you're going to put 4 or 5 on) Those are good to put INSIDE your luggage but they fall off too easy.
I work at an airport and deal with luggage every day and I can't tell you how many people do NOT even put their name on their luggage.
Secondly, know where you are going and LISTEN to the agent talking to you at check in. We ask you your FINAL destination and it should match the tag we are putting on your bag. I can't tell you how many times I have said, "You are going to Boston?" Mumbled response..."Was that a yes?". Say Boston and Austin...Gee, they sound alike don't they. Let's say your going to Rochester MN but your ticket shows Rochester NY. If you verify these things before you get on the aircraft, your luggage has a better chance of getting there with you.
Carry on is great but sometimes just not possible. Let's take skis for example, you simply can't take those on with you. If you are flying a small regional aircraft be aware that the cargo hold on those aircraft are small. A completely full passenger load in the winter just won't hold everyone's luggage, especially if there are skis and boots and extra or heavy bags.
Most airlines have a weight limit on luggage and a fee if it is overweight. Know what airline you are actually flying ( be aware of "code share" flights and ask what airline you will actually be flying) and their rules for excess or heavy luggage. Some will not take a bag weighing over 70 lbs and oversize luggage often has to go through special screening and separated from the rest of the bags.
Here's one more hint. Black roller style bags are the most common so if you can find something that is more distinctive it is easier to track down if it becomes missing.
I have a lime green suitcase with red duct tape folded over the handle with my name, cell phone, and city/state on the handle. I almost always check my luggage as I have 2 small children to travel with. I have only lost my bag once and it arrived on the next flight. Lucky? Yes. Informed? Yes. You can be too.
