Poetry: The blues

MELANCHOLY BABY

The rich throaty sound
of a black woman
spilling out the blues
the way they should be sung
pours smooth like oil,
liquid, velvety soft.
She knows what she sings.
Her voice wraps around you,
caressing you, pulling you
into her melancholy
and you know she feels it,
understands it deeper than you
ever will.
