Beginner's guide to spa manicure and pedicure

A spa manicure or pedicure should be a great experience and an opportunity to indulge. When you arrive they usually first have you choose a color. If you are unsure which color you want, ask for a suggestion or for what is the currant trend. You do not want to spend a lot of time deciding on your color because the manicurist is allowed specific amounts of time for your treatments, and there is much more enjoyment to experience. The manicurist will then shape your nails, and clean up your cuticles. This is usually followed by a relaxing hand and arm massage with a wonderfully fragranced lotion. She will then buff the nail and remove oils which prevent polish from sticking. A base coat is applied, then your color, followed by a top coat.

A pedicure is just about the same as a manicure except for your feet. Most feel that it is more relaxing, and soothing for sore tired feet. You will soak first in a tub that is usually jet powered for the ultimate experience. The nails are shaped, and cuticles are cleaned up. Calluses and rough patches are removed with exfoliating scrubs and pumice stones. Now comes the best part: the foot and lower leg massage! This leave your feet re-energized and hydrated. After the relaxing massage, the nail technician will buff and paint your nails, and your pedicure is complete.
Pedicure and manicures should be a great and relaxing experience for you. The most important thing when entering into a service, is to be sure the implements and stations are clean. If you arrive at a spa and see the floors and tables look dirty, get out of there! Sanitation is extremely important and you do not want to risk getting a possibly serious infection. Make sure the implements your nail technician uses are being placed in barbicide and are clean. Feel free to ask how they clean their pedicure tubs, if they are not using a disinfectant such as bleach, do not put your feet in that tub!
Enjoy your spa mani or pedi, and remember to be aware of the spa's cleanliness. Don't be scared to walk out if you feel they are not sanitary. Also, don't forget to tip your service provider, especially if you enjoyed your treatment and plan to return.
