Syzygy: Not just for Scrabble Anymore

Sysygy, just sitting in an open place on the board with no bonuses is worth 27 point in Scrabble. This would make it worth knowing to some people but it is much much more useful than just roasting your Scrabble partner's proverbial duck.

The word Syzygy comes from the Greek word Syzygos which means "to yoke together" and means any form of symmetry between to related objects. We see Syzygys all the time though we seldom realize it.

The most common for of Syzygy that we see is between astral bodies who are locked together by gravity and show symmetry by aligning together as happens in eclipses or when planets line up in opposition. Outside of science but in the realm of stars and planets, the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius was predicted by the alignment of stars. Thus, Syzygy predicts the solar transits of Mercury and the rise of the musical "Hair."

Syzygy is also used to described a remarkable number of events elsewhere in the world. If two protozoa exchange genetic material in a non-sexual relationship, this is considered a Syzygy. It also describes communication between conscious and unconscious minds in Jungs' world.

My favorite personal use, beside baffling Scrabble players is Syzygy Darklock a the main character in the Marvel comic book line Dreadstar. He and his companions act as a syzygy to balance their energies and prevent an apocalyptic war. He's a cyborg who hangs around with a blind telepath and a catman. Much cooler than the nerds I play Scrabble with.
