What are learning disabilities (LDs)?

Disorders in this area are audibly noticed and may be treated through a speech pathologist and practice with conversational techniques.

Physical problems may also be considered a learning disability when they affect fine motor skills. Dyspraxia, commonly called developmental coordination disorder, affects the ability to write words or numbers. Frustration is highly evident with this type of disability because the child has a full understanding and can respond adequately, but is unable to physically write his or her response on paper. The use of a keyboard or even having the option of verbal expression can be extremely helpful in this instance.

One in six children in the United States suffers from these disabilities and their effects. Children with learning disorders will undergo high levels of stress and a variety of behavioral issues such as decreased attention levels, anger, sadness, and shyness. The earlier in life a disability is discovered, the lighter the effects will be. There are a wide variety of treatments available and possibly a combination of treatments are necessary. Regardless of the treatment methods used, schools, teachers, and parents need to keep open minded and patient. This gives the child the opportunity to relax and be more open to the treatment methods producing a higher rate of success.
