India occupies around 2.3 % of world's geographical area but carries 16.6% of total world's population. India is expected to overtake China to become the world's most populous country within the next 25 years. The both sentences prove that India is over populated. Few reasons for large population in India are as follows,
Illiteracy is the one of the main reason behind it. Unfortunately females are less literate than males. So they don't realize the problems of large families. Similarly, illiteracy rate is more in rural areas over the urban areas. These large, agricultural, predominated rural population are less informed about the family planning methods such as condoms, contraceptive pills.
High rate of fertility as well as low rate of mortality or high birth rate and low death rate is another factor for large population. Although it gives a positive sign about improved health facilities and it results in declined mortality rate but not in impressive declined birth rate. Increased life expectancy rate is also playing an important role in increased population. In 2000, a minority of the population was over 60, but by 2050 retired people will form a significant part of society. This raises another question about how they will be supported, as fewer than 10% receive pensions.
Lack of awareness is another reason , people are not well informed about the cons of large population like scarcity of water , food, mineral resources etc. Even government is also responsible for this problem as they make rules but they fail to make people to follow them. Probably can be termed as lack of government determination.
The traditional people of India still consider child as a gift of God. Boy is considered as a carrier of the family tree so a desire for a boy child results in increased family size. In some communities, they become selfish for their community itself and to strengthen their caste they deliver more or more child.
