There is no doubting that Tottenham have shown a large improvement in a short space of time under Martin Jol and they are beginning to become a threatening force again, within the top tier of English football. In reality though this improvement is not enough for them to break into the top four this season.

Martin Jol has made a point of bringing in young players, many of whom are English, and has set about making a team for the future. That is one of the main problems for Tottenham's chances; they are not yet ready and may be a season or two away from achieving top four status. Many of the players are still inexperienced and are still maturing in the game. It is clear that the squad is talented but that will not be enough this season.

The current top four teams have shown a level of consistency season after season, which has made it almost impossible for other teams to stay with the pace they set. Each squad has been strengthened to maintain their lofty position and as a result each will be challenging for the major honours once again.

Another very real concern is that the small group of teams that challenge behind the top four has increased also, making it even more competitive in the league. Newcastle United, Manchester City, West Ham United and Portsmouth have all spent big money during the summer and will all be hoping to break into the top four this season. Then there are the likes of Everton, Aston Villa and Blackburn who have all been shrewed in the transfer market and have added more quality to their squads.

I agree that Tottenham should aim for the top four, but I feel that if they were to finish in fifth, they can consider that the season was a successful one. They will continue to improve and will stay with the leaders for the first half of the season but they will not be able to maintain it until the final whistle is blown in May.
