How will Beckham impact American soccer?

This past August 9th, RFK Stadium was sold out for a MLS Soccer match, a fact that is almost unheard of for the games of home team D. C. United. What was the reason why so many turned out? They wanted to see one man. David Beckham. His presence, as a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy, tells the world that Beckham has already impacted soccer in the United States.

American fans are now lining up to see the former English Footballer. Tickets for future games involving the LA Galaxy are in high demand, and television ratings are up for matches featuring Beckham. This is great news for those of us that would love to see the sport grow in the land of the free.

There is much to like about Mr. Beckham. He seems charming and very personable. We love his wife! Both of them appear to be right at home in Los Angeles. In fact if we did not know any better, they would be mistaken as typical Hollywood couple! We like his work ethic, and, of course, he is a superstar. You know we all but worship stars here! Beckham and his family seem to have welcomed all the friendly folks of the country, as much as we have welcomed him.

Soccer has come a long way in the United States, however, there are still some major reasons why the world's most popular pastime may never be a major sport the States. With the popularity of the National Football League, baseball and basketball, USA's best young athletes are overwhelmingly choosing to play in to those entities, rather than soccer. Secondly, soccer does not translate well on American commercial oriented television. Broadcasters are reluctant to televise soccer, preferring the made for TV format of the stick and ball sports, complete with innings and end of quarters to slot their advertising in. The arrival of David Beckham could change that.

Will David Beckham be just another American novelty, after the aura of his entrance wears off? We hope not, however, I believe Mr. Beckham will need to preform well, to keep us interested. Already, he is currently attracting new fans to this great sport of soccer. By drawing more fans, there is a chance that he may be inviting more of those talented youngsters into a soccer career. We hope so! More fans may lead to more demands to see matches on television. It is up to Beckham to lead the way. In time, that is how we will evaluate his true impact on American Soccer.
